THE BOOKSHELF

I ghosted my first book in 1978 in collaboration with Jimmy Greaves, the greatest of all British football goalscorers who was just beginning to win a battle with the bottle. The book was called This One's On Me and became a best seller. Jimmy and I have since collaborated on 17 books. Have you considered Ghosting into Print? Golden Rule No 2 could help you find a fascinating way of getting published. Apart from my 17 books with Greavsie I have also been the orchestrator of the following books:

Gordon Banks (Banks of England). Autobiography of England's greatest goalkeeper, including a match-by-match breakdown of every one of his 73 international games, serialised in the Sunday Mirror. Publisher: Arthur Barker.
Frank Bruno (Know What I Mean ... Eye of the Tiger ... From Zero to Hero). Two autobiographies and one biography on Britain's favourite boxing character. All were serialised. Publishers, in order: Stanley Paul, Weidenfeld & Nicolson, Andre Deutsch.
Jim Watt (Watt's My Name). Autobiography of Scotland's ring hero. Serialised in the Sunday Mail. Publisher: Stanley Paul.
Sir Henry Cooper (How to Box ... 100 Greatest Boxers ... My Most Memorable Fights). Publishers: Stanley Paul (2), Queen Anne Press,
The Golden Milers (with Sir Roger Bannister). A history of the world mile record breakers. Publisher: Pelham Books.
The Marathon Kings. A history of the marathon from Pheidippides in 490BC to the modern masters. Publisher: Pelham Books.

Crown of Thorns, history of the world heavyweight championship (with Chrysalis executive Neil Duncanson). Boxtree.

Mike Tyson, For Whom the Bell Tolls (with Reg Gutteridge) Mike Tyson, the Release of Power (with Reg Gutteridge). Two biographical books on Iron Mike. Publishers: Leonard/QAP, Warwick Publishing (USA), Star Books
Denis Compton, the Untold Stories. Biographical book looking at Compo through the eyes of others. Publisher: Andre Deutsch.
The Olympics Handbook 1980 and 1984. A history and a guide to Moscow and LA Games. Holt, Rinehart & Winstone (USA).
Brendan Foster's Olympic Heroes. Britain's great track hero spotlights the greats of Olympic history. Publisher: Harrap.
The Judge (1001 sporting arguments settled ... based on my weekly column in The Sun newspaper). Publisher: Andre Deutsch.
The ABC of Soccer Sense (with Tommy Docherty). Illustrated tactics of modern football. Publisher: Batsford.
The Rat Race (with Tommy Docherty). Tommy's turbulent times in football. It became turbluent between the two of us when Tommy told his story to the Daily Mirror before publication, and I countered by selling my version to The Sun. Tommy threatened to sue, and I suggested we change the title of the book to The Writ Race. The Publishers pulped the book, and Tommy and I have since kissed and made up. He remains one of my all-time favourite characters. This book writing can be great fun!
Barry McGuigan, Fighting for Peace. Another publishing drama. It was a book in partnership with my old pal Peter 'The Poet' Batt. He wrote about McGuigan the Man. I wrote about McGuigan the Fighter. Peter ran into legal problems, and the book was pulped.
Lucky the Fox (with Barbara Wright). One of my more unusual assignments. The story of an adopted fox cub. Publisher: Harrap.
Book of Cricket Lists (with Tom Graveney). A master batsman selecting his greatest of greats. Publisher: Sidgwick & Jackson.
Book of Rugby Lists (with Gareth Edwards) The Book of Football Lists (with Jimmy Greaves). Publisher:Sidgwick & Jackson.
